Snag help

Destinations

A destination is a place Snag sends captures to. The app calls them connections: Settings > Connections lists what is connected, and Add a connection connects something new.

Your Snag account and your connections

  • Every capture is kept in your Snag account, whatever else is connected. See Your Snag account. Settings > Connections says so under the list: "Everything is also kept in your Snag account."
  • Until something is connected and made the default, captures go only to your Snag account.
  • Connecting a service never changes the default by itself. The last step of every set-up asks, and only Make default changes it.
  • Disconnecting the default puts your Snag account back as the default.

The Connected list

Settings > Connections shows each connection, in the order connected:

Part of the rowWhat it shows
Name and tileThe service, with a two-letter tile
Second lineWhere captures land, for example "Notes vault, daily note", "as alex, Snag", "Inbox". Amber when the connection needs attention: "Sign in again", "Check the secret" (Send to a URL answered 401 or 403), or "Couldn't reach Apple Notes. Set up the shortcut"
Default tagOn the connection that is the default
DotGreen when ready, amber when it needs you
Off tagIn place of the dot, on a dimmed row, when the connection is switched Off. "Off: 3 waiting" when captures are waiting for it

Tap a row to open the connection's page: its status line ("Connected, ..."), the On switch, its own choices, a line saying what it takes ("Takes voice, notes and tasks."), Make default and Disconnect. An amber status shows a Sign in again button (Allow Reminders for Reminders; Get the shortcut for Apple Notes; none for Send to a URL, whose secret is on the same page).

Switching a connection Off

Each connection's page has an On switch, on until you change it. Under it: "Off keeps your sign-in. Snag stops sending here until you turn it back on. Anything waiting sends then."

  • Off keeps everything. The sign-in, keys and the connection's settings stay as they are. Nothing needs setting up again.
  • New captures skip it. It is left out of Send to, and Pro does not send there either.
  • Captures already waiting are held. They are not dropped, not marked as failed and not retried. Settings > Connections shows "Off: 3 waiting" (with the count). Recent shows each one as "Waiting: Todoist is off". Switch it back On and they send.
  • The default switched Off. Captures go to the connections still On, the same way as when the default does not take a capture's kind. With none On, they stay on the phone.
  • Every connection Off. Captures are still kept in your Snag account on the phone. Snag shows "Saved on this iPhone."

VoiceOver reads the switch with the connection's name, and reads the row's Off tag.

Add a connection

  1. Open Settings > Connections > Add a connection.
  2. Search, or browse the groups: Notes and docs, Tasks, Workspace, and Advanced (Send to a URL and Email-in) once Snag Control is on. A search with no match says "Nothing by that name. Most apps take mail: try Email-in, or Send to a URL."
  3. Tap a service. A connected one is tagged Connected (or Needs you) and opens its page instead.
  4. Follow the service's set-up. Each step shows its place, for example "2 of 4". Back on the first step returns to Add.
  5. The last step says "Connected." and a line such as "Obsidian, vault "Notes", today's daily note. Make it your default?" Task apps ask "Make it your default for tasks?"
  6. Tap Make default, or Not now to keep the current default.

The set-up asks "Where should your snags go?": Apple Notes, Todoist, Obsidian, Something else (every service) or "Just keep them in Snag". Picking a service runs its set-up and makes it the default; there is no default question, because the pick is the answer. See Getting started.

Make default

Any of these makes a connection the default:

  • Make default at the end of its set-up.
  • Make default on its connection page. The page then shows the Default tag and "Captures go here unless you pick another."
  • Make default in the Send to sheet.

Send to, for one capture

Once something is connected, the capture screen shows a chip with the current destination's name.

  1. Tap the chip. The sheet "Send this to" opens, with "For this capture only."
  2. Pick a connection, or Just Snag ("Keep it here, send nowhere").
  3. Tap Use for this capture only, or Make default to keep the choice.

The pick is used once, then the default applies again. Siri and hands-free captures always use the default. A connection that needs attention shows "Sign in again first" in the sheet (or its own line, as in the Connected list). Add a connection in the sheet opens Settings.

On Free, only connections that are On count towards the one. You can keep several signed in with one On: switching a second one On while another is On shows the same screen as adding one, where "Switch to Todoist instead" turns the other Off.

On Free, adding a second connection in Settings shows "Send to more than one place" and "Free sends each snag to one place. Pro sends it to Obsidian and Todoist at once." (with the two names). It offers Pro, or "Switch to Todoist instead", which runs the new set-up and then lets the old connection go. The set-up picks one place, so it never shows this.

When Pro ends, every connection stays connected. The default keeps receiving; the others that are On pause. A connection you switched Off stays Off. If the default is Off, the first connection that is On keeps receiving. The "You're back on Free" screen names it: "Todoist keeps receiving". See Plans.

What each destination takes

A capture is a voice capture, a typed note (with photos or files), or a task. Snag sends each capture only to destinations that take its kind. When the chosen one does not (a note with Reminders as the default), it goes to the next connection that does, in the order connected, else only to your Snag account.

"Things to do" are the actions Snag finds in a voice capture. See Smart captures. A voice capture with none found is one item.

The queue

Every capture is saved on the iPhone first, then sent.

  • Offline. With no signal, the capture waits and sends when there is a connection: "Saved on the phone. I'll send it when there's signal."
  • Retries. Each destination keeps its own line and its own retry timing: 30 seconds, then 1, 2, 4 minutes and so on, up to 30 minutes apart. A service that is down or busy does not hold up the others.
  • Sign-in needed. A destination whose sign-in has lapsed (or whose token, permission or address is missing) holds only its own captures. The others carry on. Snag says "Saved. Sign in needed, I'll keep it." and the connection shows Sign in again. Send to a URL refused with 401 or 403 says "That URL refused the secret." and shows Check the secret.
  • Apple Notes. A capture counts as sent only when the shortcut reports it finished. A missing shortcut, an error or no answer within 30 seconds holds Apple Notes' captures with "Couldn't reach Apple Notes. Set up the shortcut" until the shortcut is set up or Retry is tapped.
  • Refused. A destination that refuses a capture for good marks it in the Snagged list: "Saved, but it was refused. It's in the list." Retry there sends it again.
  • No duplicates. Each delivery keeps the same key on every attempt, and Snag records what each destination has already taken, so a retry after a lost reply does not make a second note, task or reminder.
  • While Snag is open. Things, Apple Notes and Email-in need Snag on screen. Captures for them wait until Snag is next open: "Snagged. Things gets it when Snag is open."

Disconnecting

  1. Open Settings > Connections and tap the connection.
  2. Tap Disconnect, then Disconnect again in "Disconnect Obsidian?".

The prompt says "Captures go to your Snag account instead." for the default, else "Snag stops sending here." Snag forgets what it kept for that service: the token or app password, the URL and secret for Send to a URL, the email-in address, the vault folder. Reminders access stays as set in the iOS Settings app, and Things and Apple Notes keep their list or shortcut name for next time. Captures already in your Snag account stay there.
