Snag help

Privacy

A summary of what the Snag app does with your words, recordings and keys. The full privacy notice is on the Snag website and is linked from the Pro screen (Privacy Policy).

In short

  • Your speech is turned into words on the iPhone. Apple's speech servers are used only for a language the iPhone cannot do itself, and only after you say yes for that language.
  • Actions are found on the iPhone, unless you choose your own model.
  • Your Snag account is kept on this iPhone. Nothing is uploaded to a Snag server.
  • A capture goes from the iPhone straight to the services you connect, and nowhere else.
  • Tokens, passwords and keys are kept in the iPhone's Keychain, on this device only.
  • The app has no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting and no third-party SDKs.

What stays on the phone

What goes where

DestinationWhat it gets
Your Snag accountStays on the iPhone
NextcloudThe text, the recording and attachments, on your own server
ObsidianMarkdown in the vault folder you pick. The recording only if you turn on saving audio.
Apple RemindersA reminder per action, in the list you pick, through iOS. Snag reads only list names.
Apple Notes, ThingsHanded to the app on the phone, while Snag is open
Email-inAn email to the address you set
Send to a URLA post to the address you set, with your shared secret in a header if you set one
OneNoteThe text and attachments; the recording if you turn on including audio
Todoist, Microsoft To Do, Google TasksThe text only
Your own speech serviceThe recording, sent from the iPhone to the address you entered
Your own modelThe words of a capture, sent from the iPhone to the address you entered

Each service's own terms decide what happens next and how long it keeps a capture. Signing in to a service happens on that service's own page in a browser sheet: "Snag never sees the password." See Destinations and Bring your own.

Snag Control talks to the agents and endpoints you set up, from the iPhone. See Snag Control.

Speech

  • Words appear live using Apple's speech recognition on the iPhone.
  • For a language with no on-device support, Snag asks once per language: "Use Apple's speech servers for <language>?" / "On-device speech isn't available for <language> on this iPhone, so Snag can't show your words as you speak. Your recording is kept either way. Snag asks once for each language." Keep it on this iPhone or Use Apple's servers. The answer takes effect from the next recording.
  • "add more", "done" and the other hands-free answers are recognised on the iPhone where the language supports it.
  • Settings > Voice > AI and speech: "On this iPhone is the default, and nothing leaves the phone."

Permissions

Each is asked the first time it is needed (microphone and speech also in first run). Change them in the iPhone Settings app under Snag.

PermissionWhat iOS showsUsed for
Microphone"Snag records what you say so it can be sent where you chose."Recording captures
Speech recognition"Snag shows your words as you speak and hears "done" or "add more". Recognised on this iPhone, unless you allow Apple's speech servers for a language this iPhone can't do."The live transcript and hands-free answers
Reminders"Snag adds a reminder for each thing you say you need to do, in the list you pick. It reads only list names, to let you pick one."The Apple Reminders destination
Camera"Take a photo to add to a capture, or scan a workflow's QR code for a command."Take a photo, and scanning command codes
Face ID"Snag asks for Face ID before approving anything that can't be undone."Snag Control approvals
Local network"Snag talks to agents on your own network when you set one up in Snag Control."Snag Control agents on your own network
Notifications"Turn on notifications so Snag can tell you when something needs you", then iOS's prompt. Asked when first needed: a send that needs you, the first agent added, or the start of a trial. Never during the set-upCaptures that could not send, the trial reminder, Snag Control

Choosing from the photo library uses Apple's picker, which shares only the photos you pick, so there is no photo library permission.

Recording carries on with the screen locked or another app in front, for a recording you started. Snag does not listen in the background otherwise.

Snag Pro

Apple takes the payment. Snag never sees your card, billing address or Apple account details. The app checks your subscription with the App Store only.

Deleting your data

Settings > Account > Delete account deletes every capture, recording and file, and everything waiting to send, from the iPhone. What was already sent to your own tools stays there. Deleting the app also deletes everything it stored on the iPhone; Keychain items may remain until the iPhone is erased.
